Taking matters into his own hands

It was poker night tonight, and so the kids and I were once again left to our own devices for the evening. Ben and Clara and I were hanging out in the living room doing quiet activities as bedtime was approaching.

Ben- "Can we do puzzles, Mama?"

Me- "Sure Ben, after Clara goes to sleep. We can't do puzzles with Clara."

Ben- "I think Cwara's ready for night-night."

Me- "No Ben, not yet. Soon."

A few minutes pass by and Ben is getting restless.

Ben- "Mama, Cwara's ready for night-night."

Me- "No Ben, she's not ready yet. Look (I point at her playing happily with her toys) she's still playing nicely."

Ben gets up and goes over to Clara, grabs both of her chubby arms in his hands and squeezes hard. Clara starts to scream. Ben runs back to my side

Ben- "See Mama. She's tired. She's ready for night-night."

Clever, little guy! But I am sure that is NOT what you were thinking at the time!

Yep, that would have bought a bedtime earlier than Clara's here at our house.

Lynn-Well yes, of course Ben got in trouble for this and did NOT get to play puzzles, but I still thought it was pretty funny. Especially since he didn't even try to hide that he was doing it, he just walked over and squeezed her. And when I said "Did you make Clara cry??" He said:

"Yes, I did. Can we play puzzles now?"

Heh.

NICE! Nothing like a little initiative, eh?

Amazing how he knew before you did that she was "tired!" Clever, sneaky little boy!!

Oh gosh, Joy, I didn't mean to insinuate that you didn't discipline Ben for this. That's absolutely none of my business. What I typed was just the first thing I thought of after I laughed. I can see how what I said could be misconstrued. I can assure you I wasn't trying to give any parental instruction to you. I need too much of it myself sometimes :o)

How funny! Awww, he justs wants his momma to himself for a bit, bet ya had to turn your head and smile about his ability to solve his dilemma, cute. And so proud he was.

Oh that's okay Lynn, I am sorry I misinterpreted. I guess I did think that you were telling me I should have punished him, which I agreed with, but I tend to be oversensitive. It's one of my many flaws. But I wasn't mad or anything.

But then I thought, maybe I should have written about what happened after he did this, so that everyone realized that while I did indeed have to turn my head and laugh, he did get in trouble.

Gee-you think maybe I am overthinking this a bit?? :)

I think women, in general, tend to overthink things. Myself definitely included. I was hoping you weren't mad and I'm very happy they you weren't. I honestly don't know if I would have made it through the incident without cracking a smile. I bet you sure did enjoy a huge laugh after he did go to bed. Don't ever feel like you have to explain your parenting to anyone!

hmmm... well, the boy just really wanted time with his Mama, but the methods left something to be desired, eh?
